Radio control power flying is an area of aeromodelling which covers a huge variety of model types and flying styles. Radio control model flying began in the USA in 1937 and has grown in sophistication and technological advance ever since. Initial designs were converted from free flight, retaining their inherent stability. Today radio control aircraft range from small inexpensive foam trainers through to complex multi channel scale aircraft.
Learning to fly radio control aircraft is a great way to start aeromodelling. It gives opportunity to learn about aerodynamics, engines, electrical systems and building skills – although it is possible to purchase ready to fly aircraft as well.
CMAC has a club trainer (an easy to fly high wing plane – ideal to start out with) that anyone is able to come and have a go at flying with the support of our club training team. Please give Graham Moffat a ring 021 02254347 if you are interested.
Radio control power flying generally happens at CMAC on Sunday mornings after 9am. The field is also available for power flying on Saturday afternoons (after 1pm) and during the week. Many types of models are flown – sport, scale, helicopter, aerobatic, etc. The aircraft seen at the field use many different methods of propulsion including electric motors, internal combustion engines and gas turbines.
If you are interested in radio control model aircraft, come out to the field for a look on a Sunday morning!
